#PrematurityIs costing lives
Prematurity is the leading cause of death in children under five around the world and here in the UK.
Sadly 1 million children across the world die each year from the complication of premature birth. Globally, it’s the leading cause of death in children under 5.
Every day in the UK, 260 babies are admitted to neonatal care. One in four of these little ones will need life-saving intensive care.
Bliss exists to give every baby born premature and sick in the UK the best chance of survival and quality of life. We support parents to care for their babies, campaign for better neonatal care and enable life-changing research, to give babies born premature or sick the best possible start in life.
On 17 November each year, Bliss joins with organisations from around the world to raise awareness of premature birth and take action for babies born too soon.
The UK has the second worst neonatal mortality rate in Western Europe, at 1.4 per 1,000 births.
Our target is to raise £15,400 – £10 for every baby born needing neonatal care in World Prematurity Week. One in four of those babies will need life-saving intensive care.
It costs Bliss £15,400 to deliver one of our specialised training courses to healthcare professionals. This course teaches doctors and nurses to understand how family-centred care positively affects brain development in premature babies, leading to empowerment for parents and better health outcomes for the baby.
